Learner: Momo                     Learning Coach: Abby Morgan          Date: 10 February 2015
Learning Area: Math
Learning Observed
As part of developing understandings of shapes and how they occur in our natural environment the learners were asked to identify as many shapes in Ormiston as possible. To begin we identified shapes we knew then went about finding them in our Habitat. Momo was able to identify squares in the capart pattern, rectangles on the ceiling, and a circle in our school logo! Momo has a wide range of knowledge about shapes and is able to share this with others.
Evidence of learning
Momo was able to identify shapes in our school environment - even in our logo!
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Momo was displaying the Key Competencies of using language, symbols, and texts as she was able to communicate her ideas to others and was applying her thinking skills to decode and identify the shapes in our environment. Momo was using the Vision Principles of capable as she was using existing knowledge and extending her capabilities.
Next Learning Steps
  • Introduce to the properties and attributes of shapes
  • Explore understandings of 3D shapes
  • Explore construction using 3D shapes

Learner: Angkor and Momo     Learning Coach: Abby Morgan       Date: 4 February
Learning Area: Literacy
Learning Observed
During iExplore time I sat with Momo and Angkor looking at the alphabet bean bags, together we created a game where we would take turns showing the letter then racing to name it and a word that starts with that letter. After we had used all the bean bags I asked if they could put them in alphabetical order. Together Momo and Angkor began sorting the bean bags. Angkor was identifying words that started with the letter they were up too. When Angkor got to the letter L he told me he knew a song all about it. I asked him to sing it for me (See the link below). Angkor was able to recite the song that uses alliteration and instructs on how to draw it. He felt very proud when I showed him the video.
Evidence of learning
Angkor and Momo sorting the bean bags into alphabetical order.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Angkor and Momo were effectively collaborating as they worked together to complete the learning activity they had created. Angkor began our learning adventure through his curious nature. While looking around our habitat he came across the bean bags and together we created the game. Momo and Angkor were both applying the Key Competencies of thinking, using language, symbols, and texts.
Next Learning Steps
  • Learn the New Zealand Sign Language for the letters
  • Identify the sounds the letters make
  • Record the letters
